Heat transfer in through flow rotary dryer was investigated by small scale
continuous and batch drying test using spherical silica-gel particles. The total rate
of heat transfer to the particle in the dryer, q, was estimated from moisture balance
at the constant drying rate period. Heat conduction from cylinder wall to bed, qs,
was obtained by extrapolating the plot, q vs. superficial air velocity in bed, us, to
the point us=o. It was found that, in this type of dryer the heat conduction from
the cylinder wall to the particle bed, qs, contribute a large portion of the total rate
of heat transfer, q, for the case of relatively smaller diameter of cylinder. The
coefficient of convective heat transfer of the moving bed in the through flow rotary
