The axial mixing of liquid in bubb1e towers with fluid circulating at the bottom
has been investigated for three tower diameters: 1-in., 1-1/2-in. and 2-in. The gas
velocities were varied from 0 to 4 cm./sec. The circu1ation rate was kept constant at
about 1.5 g.p.m. The experimental technique consisted of determining the steady-state
dye concentrations by light transmittance through the towers. These concentration curves
were then interpreted by means of a one dimensional dispersion model.
Axial mixing coefficient appeared to be independent of bubble diameter within the
experimental range, however scatter in the data precluded accurate determination of
the dependence of the coefficient on bubb1e diameter. The axial mixing coefficient was
found to increase with tower height, tower diameter and gas velocity and, at the bottom
