Dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) reacts reversibly with cellulose to form a
nitrite. The equilibrium constants of this reaction using appropriate model com-
pounds were found to be K1=14 for primary hydroxyl group and K2=0.5 for
secondary hydroxyl groups. The applicability of these equilibrium constants to the
heterogeneous system of liquid N2O4 and cellulose was established.
When cellulose was treated with liquid N2O4, it changed in crystal lattice but
retained the fibrous structure. However, when N2O3 was added, the cellulose nitrite
formed was found to swell in an excess of nitrogen oxides, and the swollen gel
would flow under pressure. The roles of N2O3, and nitric acic, a product from nitrite
formation, in aiding the plasticization of cellulose by N2O3 were discussed. - 中文關鍵字: --
