Tracer technique was used to study the mixing mechanism and the residence
time distribution of granular material flowing through the system of a rotary drum
with cross air flow. A model of plug flow with dispersion was used to determine the
longitudinal dispersion coefficient under various operating conditions. The dispersion
coefficient of the system is found to be nearly unaffected by the air flow in the region
of lower cross flow air velocity but increases in proportion to the square root of the
