Graft copolymers were synthesized by reacting anionic living polystyrene
(PS) with (1) polyvinyl chloride, and (2) poly-β-pinene oxide under various
conditions. It was found that the grafting efficiency and content of grafted PS
were increased with the reaction time and the concentration of the backbone
polymer, but reached a limiting value of 22.6% in the case of PVC and 57.1% in
the case of poly-β-pinene oxide. An increase in degree of polymerization (DP) of
the living polystyrene increased the content of grafted PS, by reduced the grafting
efficiency. Living polystyrene prepared with n-BuLi gave better results as compared
to those prepared with sodium naphthalene.
The grafted polymers were identified by infrared absorbance and chemical tests.
The rheological properties of the copolymers were studied with Rheovibron DDV-
II, together with blended polymer samples. The glass transition temperature of the
grafted copolymers were shifted to a higher temperature than those of blended
polymers owing, probably, to the steric hindrance of the branched chains in
