The effect of power consumption and mixing intensity of glutamic acid fermentation in a semi-batch operation is studied in both 5001 pilot scale fermenter and commercial scale fermenters. A population balance model is used to describe the mixing of fluid in the system and a parameter of the model is defined as the mixing intensity which can be seen as an index of homogeneity of the system.
A unique relationship between yield and mixing intensity was obtained to solve the problem in the multiple relationship of power consumption per unit volume and yield due to different structure in fermenter design.
The data obtained from batch operations were also analyzed by using, a kinetic model proposed by Kono and Asai. The results show that the yield of glutamic acid associates only with the concentration of nongrowth cell and is not affected by the concentration of the growth cells.
The result obtained in this study was applied to modify the design of an existing 100 kl fermenters, and design a new 160 kl fermenter. The modification in design has resulted in an improvement of more than 15% yield in the 100 kl fermenters and also demonstrated excellent performance in the new 160 kl fermenter as well as in the 100 kl fermenters. - 中文關鍵字: --
