- 中文摘要: "Is teaching a profession?" has been a controversial issue, while medicine has long been recognized as full professional. Although educators have been devoted to professionalize teaching, it is still regarded as semi-professional. American medical education and research, once subservient to European medical education and research in the mid-nineteen century, have become the best in the world. This paper explains the emergence of American current system of medical education, and the importance of these events to the development of the medical profession. It is hoped that educational circle can learn lessons from medical profession so as to professionalize teaching.
- 英文摘要: 教師是否專業,一直是倍受爭議的話題,但醫師的專業性則是眾所公認。長久以來,中外教育界多從教育的角度,努力將教師帶向專業化,但不可諱言的,效果不彰。本文跳脫過去的方式,從專業性廣被認可的醫學專業角度切入,尤其是美國醫學專業,希望為教師專業化開啟另外一扇視窗。自一八七○年代到一九二○年代,短短五、六十年間,美國醫師素質從非常低落,提升到專業性而受到肯定;醫學聖地由歐陸轉到美國,且其領先地位迄今仍不容挑戰;醫學專業體系堅實穩固,迄今未有本質上的改變。美國醫學專業蛻變的過程、發展過程中的得與失、蛻變過程中的衝突與抉擇,都值得教育界參考,或許可以提供教育界將教師帶向專業化一些啟發與思考。
