Direct heat transfer from molten droplets of sulfur to a liquid coolant
in countercurrent flow was investigated. This information is needed in designing
a cooling column for the process of granulation by the breakup of a liquid jet.
Smooth granulation of sulfur by the breakup of a sulfur jet is realized in liquid
coolants which are dilute aqueous solutions of normal butyl alcohol. The size
distribution of sulfur particles was studied. For a given coolant flow rate and a
given coolant surface tension, the weight mean average diameter of the particles
is correlated by …… The heat transfer coefficient between the solidifying droplets and a coolant is
represented by Nusselt number, hd/k. Nu decreases with increasing holdup. The
data are correlated by ……Heat transfer coefficient obtained was used to calculate the column height and the
temperature distribution of coolant. The results were compared with an experi-
