Diblock copolymer of α-methylstyrene and butadiene is synthesized with
n-BuLi as an initiator. Toluene is the solvent and THF as the accelerator. Trace
amount of THF in polymerization solution will increase 1, 2-addition of poly-
butadiene block greatly. However, the yields of 1, 2 addition polybutadiene will
level off gradually as the amount of THF increases continuously. Electron micro-
scopic texture and viscoelasticity of diblock copolymer samples cast from THF,
toluene, benzene and CCl4 are studied. Two peaks are observed in the dynamic
mechanical loss (tan δ) curve at -27 and 145℃ which are attributed to the segmental
motion of polybutadiene and poly-α-methylstyrene, respectively, and the activated
energy for the latter peak is 145.8kcal/mol. It proves the microphase separation
of the block copolymer. Different electron microscopic textures are observed for
the same sample cast from different solvents. It is because each solvent has its
