- 英文摘要: Since the recent discovery of selenocysteine as the 21stamino acid in protein, the field of selenium biology hasrapidly expanded. Twelve mammalian selenoproteinshave been characterized to date and each contains sele-nocysteine that is incorporated in response to specificUGA code words. These selenoproteins have differentcellular functions, but in those selenoproteins for whichthe function is known, selenocysteine is located at theactive center. The presence of selenocysteine at criticalsites in naturally occurring selenoproteins provides anexplanation for the important role of selenium in humanhealth and development. This review describes knownmammalian selenoproteins and discusses recent devel-opments and future directions in the selenium field.
