- 中文摘要: In this study, a two-tier instrument was developed to diagnose Taiwanese high school students' understanding of geometric optics as it applies to the formation of shadows and images due to reflections in a plane mirror. In the development of the instrument, concept maps and propositional statements representing the knowledge required to understand the related geometric optics were listed. Afterwards, a paper-and-pencil test consisting of open-ended items was developed and administered to high school students. The answers were then analyzed and coded concerning the misconceptions. Interview with some of the students was followed up when further explanations or clarification were needed. Based on the most often identified misconceptions, a two-tier instrument that employed multiple choice tests was developed to assess students' understanding of the formation of images by a plane mirror. The internal-consistency reliability coefficient was 0.74. The content validity verified that the instrument measured the concepts that it purported to cover. Results of the test administered to 317 students in Taiwan are presented. The two-tier instrument is appended.
