The dynamics response of structures totwo-way random excitations has not been so-lved analytically. Moreover, the verticalground motion has not been considered inaseismic structural design practice. In thepresent study, the Single-Degree-of-Freedomstructural systems to two-way random exci-tat,ion are simulated by using Analog Compu-ter. The probabilities of structural failureare obtained by using Monte Carlo method.It is found that the vertical ground motioncan not be ignored in aseismic design. Thecontent of this study are formula deriviations,instrumentation, simulated structural res·ponses and numerical analysis. To comparethe difference of responses between two-way excitation and one-way excitation, eleventypes of column crosssection from AISCmanual are used in numerical examples. Fur-thermore, to understand the probabilities offailure affected by different magnitude ra-tios, five structural systems are subjectedto reduced vertical excitations and the samehorizontal excitation.
