In either case, the data may indi-cate a role for kynurenine modulation of glutamatereceptors in the symptoms of inflammatory boweldis-ease.The kynurenine metabolites of tryptophan may be in-volved in the regulation of neuronal activity and thus gutmotility and secretion. We have now performed a pilotstudy to measure serum concentrations of purines andkynurenines in patients with mild inflammatory boweldisease, as well as in sex- and age-matched control sub-jects. For some analyses, the patients were subdividedinto subgroups of those with Crohn's disease and thosewith ulcerative colitis. The analyses indicated an in-creased activity in one branch of the kynurenine path-way. While there was no demonstrable difference inneopterin levels in either of the patient groups comparedwith controls, indicating that the disorders were in aninactive quiescent phase, both groups showed signifi-cantly higher levels of lipid peroxidation products. Thissuggests the presence of increased oxidative stress evenduring relative disease inactivity.
