A novel process utilizing the supported copper catalyst to remove trace
oxygen from industrial inert gas streams has been experimentally studied in
micro-size reactors. The kinetics and the rate controlling factors were analyzed
resulting in a rate equation based on first order oxygen concentration in the gas
phase.
The first order rate equation coupled with the zone length concept was utilized
to propose an engineering design methodology for the scale-up of such oxygen
gettering process. In order to test the design method, a prototype reactor using
commercial pellet was designed for treatment of 1000 scfh nitrogen gas continuously
for one month period. The result of the prototype reactor operation will be
