Expressions for the concentration profiles and effectiveness factors in catalyst
particles of various basic geometric shapes with first-order kinetics and reactant-to-
product volume change have been derived to be…….where C is the dimension1ess concentration, η the effectiveness factor, m the volume-
change modulus and superscript "⊿" represents a quantity for the case involving
volume change as opposed to that without "⊿" for the case without volume change.
Analysis of the major assumption involved indicates that these expressions should be
applicable to a large number of practical cases, especially where the product of the
volume change modulus and the reactant concentration is not exceedingly large. The
expressions also show that volume contraction aids diffusion while they revert to the
