• 中文摘要： 本研究比較台灣的四個族群（原住民、閩南人、客家人、及外省人）在教育取得過程中之相對優劣勢。我們從教育轉換的角度來解析教育取得的過程，並探討下列四個教育階段的轉變：（1）完成小學教育；（2）完成小學教育後，尚繼續完成初中教育；（3）完成初中教育後，尚繼續完成高中教育；及（4）完成高中教育後，尚繼續升學。本文所使用的資料主要來自1990年的「台灣地區社會變遷基本調查」，另外尚使用許木柱與瞿海源在 1990年所主持的「山地社會研究調查」之部份資料。本文之實證分析再次證實Tsai（1988）以及Tsai＆Chiu（1992）有關省籍教育差異之主要討論，但另外也有一些新的發現。雖然光復以來，外省人在教育競爭過程中一向居於領先之地位，但1990年的新資料顯示：在最年輕的樣本群中，外省優勢已有消減之跡象，客家人的教育取得比外省人更高。另一方面，原住民與閩南人在教育取得過程中所經驗到的相對劣勢地位，多年來並無顯著變遷的趨勢。
• 英文摘要： This paper explores trends in ethnic differences in educational attainment in postwar Taiwan.The educational attainment process is conceptualized as a sequence of transitions between fourmajor institutional educational divisions. We examine the odds of moving from one educationallevel to the next for four ethnic groups: Aborigines, Taiwanese, Hokkien, Hakka, and Mainlanders.Our empirical analyses were based on the two most recent data sets available. We found a newpattern of ethnic contrasts emerging-that is, the long-term leading status of Mainlanders ineducational competition is being challenged by Hakkas. On the other hand, we found that therelative disadvantages of the Aborigine and Hokkien groups have remained stable over time.
