A transient analysis which is applicable to fairly general fluid-solid
reaction systems is presented. Variations of the void fraction and the effective or
apparent transport properties as functions of the extent of the chemical reaction are
taken into consideration. The volume reaction model is employed as an example for
the calculation. Effects of various parameters such as the initial fluid and solid
concentrations, and the Thiele modulus on the fluid and solid concentration
distributions, and the solid conversion under isothermal conditions are numerically
determined based on the model. The results are graphically presented and
