This paper attempts to explore Faulkner's rendering of women in "Red Leaves,""A Justice," "ACourtship," and "Lo!". As these Indian tales are all masculine/patriarchal texts, women entertain very littlenarrative reality. They have virtually nothing to say, for the texts are overwhelmingly dominated by malevoices. Furthermore, while the male characters are mostly endowed with names, the female characters arecharacteristically anonymous. The list of nameless and voiceless women includes Issetibbeha's mother,Moketubbe's mother, and Issetibbeha's newest wife in "Red Leaves," Sam Fathers' mother in "A Justice,"Herman Basket's sister and Herman Basket's aunt in "A Courtship," the President's wife and the Frenchambassador's wife in "Lo!”.In addition to their ubiquitous speechlessness and anonymity, these womencharacters remain very much in the background. Moreover, if they are described at all, the description isindirect and laconic. Black women in "Red Leaves" function only as breeders to carry on the family line fromDoom through Issetibbeha to Moketubbe. While the black woman in "A Justice" is needed mainly for thecharacterization of the Ikkemotubbe after his return from New Orleans, the Indian maiden and her aunt in"A Courtship" are needed chiefly for the characterization of the Ikkemotubbe before he leaves for NewOrleans. In "Lo!”the two wives are mentioned with a view to bringing into relief what the white man believesto be "Indian" savagery. Whatever their narrative functions, these women all appear on the narrative marginand are in the tales themselves looked upon as objects of male gaze and desire. In short, so apparentlyinsignificant are they in the tales that even the few critics who have discussed Faulkner's women at any lengthhave largely ignored them..
