The reduction of dichromate ion by hypoposphorous acid in sulfuric acid solution has been found to be of the second order with respect to HCrO/sub 4/- and of the first order with respect to the total concentration of H/sub 3/PO/sub 2/.
The existence of the active form of hypophosphorous acid and the intermediate state of HCr2O6- ion was presumed. From the mesurable rate of reaction, the reaction mechanism was proposed as follows:

H2PO2*+H++2HCrO4¯ →H3PO3+HCr2O6¯+H2O where HCr2O6¯ was rapidly reduced to Cr[III].
