A total of 11 monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) was used for the Golgi study, i.e. using two variants ofthe Golgi-Kopscn method. The cuneate neurons displayed a high heterogeneity in this study. They varied in the shapes andsizes of their somata and in their dendritic morphology. They have been classified into at least two groups, based on their dendritic morphology. The first group includes the neurons with relatively straight or radiatedendrites, the iso-dendritic type; and the second group includes the neurons with relatively wavy dendrites, the allodendritic type. Group I neurons had mainly large somata (about 28-66 μm x 19-44 μm) which were polyangular, triangular or fusiform. These cells issued 3 to 8 rather thick primary dendrites which ran a long, straightdistance away from their somata and tended to be orientated in a given plane, either in the dorsoventral orin other directions. The mother and daughter dendrites of the large group I neurons covered a compara-tively large cuneate area, which was elliptical (about 750-1300 μm x 300-400 μm) or circular (about 500to 900 μm in diameter). Neurons of group Ⅱ (about 14-55 μm x 11-38 μm) were smaller than those of group Ⅰ. They alsohad polyangular, triangular, fusiform or round somata. The cells issued 2 to 5 primary dendrites of varyingdiameter from 1 to 9 μm. Some dendrites gave rise to as many as 7 generations. The dendrites ran arelatively wavy or zigzag course and covered a smaller dendritic field. The dendritic spines were not com-mon in the dendrites of both group Ⅰ and group Ⅱ neurons. Group Ⅰ and Ⅱ neurons were present at each level of the rostrocaudal extent of the cuneate nucleus. At the middle third of the cuneate nucleus, group Ⅱ neurons were concentrated mainly in the regions of'cell clusters' and 'circular laminae', although a few were also present in the ventral border region. At theselevels, group Ⅰ neurons were distributed in the periphery of the‘cell clusters' and border regions. At thecaudal third level group Ⅰ neurons were distributed more in the dorsal part of the nucleus, whereas group Ⅱneurons were more often found in the ventral part. Both groups of neurons intermingled at the rostralthird level of the nucleus.
