A reverse osmosis cell consisting of two parallelly-framed plates was
employed to the primary treatment of the sulfite pulp spent liquor. A cellulose
acetate membrane fixed on the inner surfaces of the two plates permits the fresh
water to diffuse outward through the plate.
Reverse osmosis of aqueous solution of 1.5% Lignosulfonic acid (LSA) and
sulfite pulp spent liquor were carried out in this cell by changing the feed flow
rate of solutions. The operating pressure was 40 atm.
Water fluxes and salt rejections at various liquid flow rates (U=0.45-2.62 cm/sec)
were found out water fluxes and salt rejections increased with the increase of
liquid flow rate. Turbulence promotion by glass beads fluidized in the cell had
profound effect on the increase of water flux and salt rejection especially at a low
average liquid velocity. Some elementary data on transport properties of LSA in
