Inclinical management of these patients, special attentionshould be paid to balance and handicap.Dizziness is a common problem in patients seeking med-ical help and is often associated with imbalance and han-dicap. This study aimed to reveal whether the perceptionof unsteadiness could be an indication of greater imbal-ance and handicap in these patients. Patients with dizzi-ness were categorized into two groups, steady patients(n=15) and unsteady patients (n=23), based on thepresence or absence of self-perceived unsteadiness. Thelevel of self-perceived handicap was evaluated by theDizziness Handicap Inventory. Static balance ability wasevaluated using a force platform and the center of pres-sure motion was calculated during various quiet stand-ing conditions. Dynamic balance ability was evaluatedby the functional forward reach test and Dynamic GaitIndex. All the patients also went through isometricstrength tests of the lower extremities. It was found thatall patients reported themselves to be handicapped bydizziness. Patients who perceived themselves to be un-steady had greater handicap and poorer static standing, but did not differ from the steady patients in regard tomuscle strength or functional balance tests. Thus, self-
