This work looked into vinyl acetate polymerization taking place in a
two-stage continuous flow stirred tank reactor with backflow from the second to
the first. Different initiators, acetyl peroxide and t-butyl peracetate, were chosen
for two reactors.
Mathematical analysis resulted in eight transient equations. Linearization was
applied in the vicinity of the steady states to study the local stability. Characteristic
equation coefficients generated were tested by the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion.
A Runge-Kutta 4th order numerical integration method was utilized for calcula-
ting the transient responses of temperature, monomer and initiator concentration
resulting from changes in initial conditions. System parameters involved were
fraction of feed sent to each reactor, the amount of backflow between reactors, the
residence time, the initiator concentrations, and the initial conditions.
All the calculations were performed by digital computer. Graphs of initiator
concentration vs temperature showed regions of stable or unstable steady states
under various conditions. In addition, conversion-temperature and temperature-
temperature projected phase planes were constructed to reveal how the stable steady
states were approached from varying initial conditions. - 中文關鍵字: --
