The ultrathin films of cellulose triacetate (CTA) and Polymethyl methacrylate
(PMMA) were cast using the Carnell dipping method and the dispersion method. The
thicknesses of ultrathin films cast by the Carnell dipping method were 2000 A for CTA
and 2500 A for PMMA. The ultrathin film thicknesses cast by the dispersion method
were 1900 A for CTA and 3000 A for PMMA.
The structures of ultrathin films of CTA and PMMA were characterized by wide
angle x-ray diffraction measurements, and permeability studies. The diffraction patterns
of ultrathin films at room temperature showed a more oriented structure than those of
thick films. Moreover, the annealed ultrathin films of CTA (182℃) and PMMA (150℃)
gave sharp peaks at a Bragg spacing of 9.40 and 3.l3 A in addition to the normal
crystalline peaks. The ultrathin films of CTA and PMMA at room temperature had
smaller permeability constants than thick films did. A distinct microstructure will be
suggested to exists in ultrathin films. This microstructure may well be the molecular clue
that can elucidate the performance of permeability and selectivity of the membrane in
osmosis or reverse osmosis. - 中文關鍵字: --
