There are signs now that HTLV-1/11 was alreadypresent in the Amerindian population coming originallyfrom Asia and that HTLV-l was also introduced with Afri-can slave trade and with immigration of individuals fromendemic areas of Japan. South America has approxi-mately 350 million inhabitants in its 13 countries. Thepresence of HTLV-1/11 has been reported with impressivenumbers in most of them and may be considered en-demic in this continent. The distribution of HTLV I/IIamong native Amerindian populations has shown a geo-graphic clustering of type I in the Andean highlands andBrazilian coast, while type II predominates in lowlands ofSouth America. Although comparability between studiesconducted among blood donors in different countries
