This study aimed to explore the effects of different photosynthesis texts on students’ reading comprehension. Three texts of ‘photosynthesis’ of current junior high science textbooks were excerpted as target texts (H-, K-, & N-text); these were the re-edited as DH, DK, & DN-text according to the ‘language of science’, which is inspired in the light of systemic functional linguistics and features of Mandarin, such as the implicit taxonomic implications of nominal groups, zero anaphora, and part-kind discourses. These six texts deployed almost the same content words related to photosynthesis and were controlled to have the same layout and almost the same number of words and clauses. This research was composed of two stages. The effects on readers’ conceptual change induced by reading current texts were explored firstly. Total 288 sixth graders were randomly assigned to reading H, K & N-text. The effects of current and re-edited texts were then compared. Total 711 sixth graders participated in this stage and were randomly assigned to read these six texts. Major findings indicated that (1) current texts did help the readers in understanding some concepts, unfortunately, they also worsened the level of understanding in other concepts, especially the concepts related to ambiguous part-of and kind-of relations deployed by the current texts. (2) The re-edited texts were more helpful to clarify readers’ misconceptions and to learn new concepts. These results implied that readers could be benefited from the texts that constructed according to the features of Mandarin together with the ‘language of science’.
