While Luedeking and Piret (1959) have shown that batch lactic acid
fermentation kinetic data can be used to predict the performance of a continuous
lactic acid fermentation process, their methodology for predicting continuous
fermentations is not generalizable to most fermentation processes at the present time.
The waste treatment activated sludge fermentation process is one process where
such a prediction is not appropriate.
Since traditional chemical engineering practice presumes that batch kinetic data
can be used to design continuous homogeneous chemical reactors, it would seem
that fermentation data could be similarly treated. Possible reasons for the discrepancy
between continuous chemical reactor design and continuous fermentor design are
discussed in terms of process models and biochemical mechanisms. This discussion
is illustrated with the ethanol fermentation example, in light of ethanol's importance
as a renewable energy source, and also because oxygen mass transfer limitations are
not present to complicate the kinetic analysis. - 中文關鍵字: --
