Tadpoles for laboratory use are usuallyfed vegetables which would retard develop-ment. The present experiment aims todevelop a composite feed to promote tadpolegrowth and metamorphosis. Tadpoles of Ranacatesbeiana at the hindlimb bud stage wereused. One group was fed thawed vegetableleaves as usual; the other group was fedthe composite feed containing mainly soybeancake powder, fishmeal, rice bran andvitamins. Tadpoles of the 2 groups wereweighed and their total length, tail heightand metamorphic progress were recordedbiweekly for a period of 6 weeks. Theresults show that tadpoles fed the compositefeed had stati stically a greater rate of growthand metamorphosis than those fed vegetables. The food conversion rate indicates that inorder to increase 1 g of body weight, tadpoles fed vegetables required an amountof food 6 times more than those fed compositefeed during 6 weeks of experimentaion. Theexpenses of the 2 kinds of feed also differedin which the total vegetables comsumedduring the experimental period were 3 timesmore expensive than the composite feed. Itis concluded that the composite feed is abetter food than vegetables in tadpole cultureboth for laboratory and commercial purposes.
