Five components, VII, VIIIa, VIIIb, IX and X were isolated and purified from the crude venom ofBungarus fasciatus by ion exchange chromatography on CM-cellulose and by gel filtration on SephadexG-50. Four fractions, VIIc (64 amino acid residues), VIIIa (79 amino acid residues), VIIIb (62 amino acidresidues), and IX (65 amino acid residues) produced a block of neuromuscular transmission affecting thepostsynaptic membrane in chick biventer cervicis muscle preparation. Fraction VIIc was the most toxiccomponent (LD50:0.16 mg per Kg of mouse) in this venom but others were rather weak toxins. FractionsVIIIb and IX showed protease (chymotrypsin) inhibiting action. Further characterization and amino acidsequence analyses are in progress.
