The testes of yellow-bellied country-rat (Rattus losea Swinhoe) are well developed with activespermatogenesis in winter as well as in spring. The Leydig cells contain an abundant agranular endoplasmicreticulum (ER) in the forms of branched tubules, flattened cisternae, and vesicles, containing a flocculentmaterial in the lumen. Portions of the ER have a varying number of ribosomes attached to the membrane.Continuations of the tubules with the vesicles or the cisternae are observed. Although; the fine structure ofthe Leydig cells appears to be essentially the same in the animals captured in spring and in winter, lessnumerous vesicular elements of ER and fewer numbers of ribosomes are found in the cells of winter animalsthan the spring ones. Cisternal elements of ER are observed only in winter, being partly encrusted withribosomes and partly smooth surfaced. Tubular and vesicular elements of ER are numerous in springanimals. A few membrane-bounded bodies with a matrix of higher electron density than that of the ER areobserved. Golgi apparatus is well-developed. Flocculent material is found in some of the Golgi cisternae andvesicles. Mitochondria have tubular as well as lamellar cristae and a very dense matrix with granules varyingin size and number. Cytoplasmic filaments, about 7·10 run in diameter, are found. Gap junctions areobserved between Leydig cells.
