Direct and indirect anionic polymerization were two methods used to synthesize styrene-propylene oxide triblock copolymers (ABA type thermoplastic elastomer). Through our experiments, it was found that the former method was unsuccessful. Due to the chain transfer reaction, the direct anionic polymerization was terminated after adding only few propylene oxide monomer units. However, the indirect anionic polymerization gave satisfying results. In principle, the indirect anionic polymerization method was essentially a coupling reaction. The polystyrene living ends were capped with isocynate groups and polypropylene oxide, with a molecular weight about 50,000, were synthesized with only two reactive hydroxyl end groups. Two capped polystyrene chains and the polypropylene oxide with two active end groups were then connected by a coupling reaction of OH and NCO. The product synthesized by this method was confirmed by IR spectra and gpc.
