This essay studies the mind-body relation as considered in on five Activities(wu hsinr p'ien《五行篇》)1 Which contains the lost Volumes Nos. 1 & 4 to the Lao Tzu Manuscript A, excavated(December, 1973) from the Ma-wang-tui Han Tomb No.3, Ch'ang-sha, Hu-nan Province. Thetopic of the mind-body relation is considered against the background of the intellectual history ofancient China, with special emphasis on the connection between Mencius and On Five Activities. We note how On Five Activities takes over and develops Mencius's ideas about self-cultivation on individual, social, and cosmic dimensions. Three characteristics in this documentare noted: continuity, value priority, and value directionality, among pairs of polar elements inhuman life. First, On Five Activities has continuity with various dual poles--mindheart and body, mindheart and heaven, one and five, deliberation and virtue, human way and heavenly way, mor-als and nature, inner realm and outer realm, self and society, this world and the beyond. Secondly, this document has a value priority of one pole over the other--mindheart over body, one overfive, deliberation over senses, and so on. Finally, this document has a value directionality to thesepolar elements--body serving mindheart, five converging to one, moral efforts culminating in acontinuity with the beyond. It is in this manner that Mencius's thoughts were expanded.
