臺灣沿海基礎生產力之研究

For the investigation of marine biologicalresources, the primary production in the sea isimportant as the basis of the food chain whichculminates in fishes and mammals. SinceSteemann-Nielsen(1952) first proposed themethod of determination of primary productionin the sea water by using the radiocrabon tech-nique, there were a number of studies, forinstance, Doty 1955, Jitts 1957, Berge 1958,Saijo and Ichimura 1960, Saijo 1964, Unesco1967, etc. However, few paper has been repor-ted on the primary production in the Kuroshiocurrent around Taiwan Island. The presentpaper is to summarize our studies (from May1973 to June 1976) on the primary productionin the Kuroshio current surrounding TaiwanIsland, particularly focusing on the westerncoast including Pen-Hu Islands. Generally, highvalues of the daily primary production werefound in both the aquacultural area along theChia-I coast (about 1.02±0.09 gC/m /day) andthe polluted area with raw rubbish heaps alongthe Keel ung-Patoutzu coast (about 1.08 gC, m /day). In the upwelling region of southeasterncoast, low values of the production (as 0.07 gC/M /day) were observed. Maximum photosyn-thetic rate by unit amount of chlorophyll a (socalled assimilation number) was also studied.The assimilation number in the western coastwas ranged from 1 to 25 mgC/ mg chlorophyllhr.Generally, a high assimilation number obtainedin August (summer) and low value in December(winter) and March (spring). Some discussionsare made on the observed results. And somefutural works are designed for increasing theprimary production by artifiial upwelling in theouthern part of Taiwan, for studying thepossible effect of pollutants (inorganic and or-ganic industrial wastes) on the primary produc-tivity, and for studying the transforming theaquacultural beds of oysters and clams fromthe western coast to the eastern coast by increa-sing the primary productivity. Currently, theeastern coast of Taiwan is known to be unpol-luted or least polluted area.
