Taiwan Red Cypress and Taiwan Cypress were investigated for the chemical variation and diversifica-tion among individual trees within a population. The chemical characters studied included the phenoliccomponents of small twigs, leafy branches, wood, and inner bark and the peroxidase isozymes of leafybranches. By employing a computer program developed by the present author, the phenolic data obtainedwere used in a numerical taxonomic analysis. Phenograms indicating the relationship among individualtrees based on phenolic data were obtained. The degree of correspondence between phenetic relationshipsbased on these two different categories of chemical characters were studied. There are two types ofisozyme patterns in the population of Taiwan Red Cypress studied. In the population of Taiwan Cypressstudied, there are three different types of isozyme patterns. Therefore, isozyme polymorphism existsin both populations. The results also show that the phenetic relationships among individuals based onphenolic data do not agree exactly with the phenetic relationships based on isoenzymic data. Therefore, the diversification of phenolic compounds among individual trees do not parallel exactly with those ofperoxidase isozymes. The directions of evolution of these two categories of chemical characters are notcompletely the same. Since isozymes are generally under direct control of only a few genes, the presentstudy indicates that caution should be taken when isoenzymic data are used in taxonomic and phylogeneticstudies, especially when only a few isozymes are included in the study. However, isoenzymic data seemsto be very useful for the identification of the individual member(s) of a given genotype (e.g., membersof a clone). In the population of Taiwan Red Cypress studied, there are two trees that grew so tightlytogether that judging by their outer appearance, they seem to be a single tree. The isoenzymic studyproves unequivocally that this tree is actually composed of two individual trees.
