Gamma-ray induced emulsion polymerization of vinyl monomers in bagasse
material has been investigated and discussed. The effects of bagasse and the trapped
air on the polymerization rate were found to be the same as that of the in situ liquid
polymerization system reported in the previous paper. The polymerization rate in the
emulsion system was so high that little growing polymer chain radicals were transferred
to the bagasse composites. However, the graft reaction of growing polymer radical to
bagasse cellulose was found to be considerably enhanced than that of the in situ
liquid polymerization system in the presence of water swelling agent in the emulsion.
The molecular weights of vinyl polymers formed in bagasse was determined as 1,532,000
for polyvinylacetate, 1,270,000 for polymethyl methacrylate and 907,000 for polystyrene.
These are considerably higher than the molecular weights of the respective polymer formed
by the in situ liquid polymerization system. The kinetic machanism of the gamma
ray induced emulsion polymerization of vinyl monomers were also proposed. - 中文關鍵字: --
