• 中文摘要： 作者一直認為社會亂象是暫時的，一般人民在經濟行為上廣泛的偏差，是受環境所影響，當不良環境消失，行為又會恢復常態。「深層的」「基本經濟倫理和價值」會變動，但變動的會比對「當前經濟環境的反應」要緩慢。在對1984年10月第一期台灣社會變遷基本調查的分析和金錢遊戲對台灣經濟態度影響的討論（鄭為元，1990，1991），作者認為當時的某些態度是對「當前經濟環境的反應」。面對當時的「亂象」一般人民很自然會有不滿的反應。這種對不良環境的反應會隨著「亂象」（如金錢遊戲）的消失而改變，不會破壞台灣「深層」的「基本經濟倫理和價值」。由第一期的調查資料顯示，即使受訪者認為台灣社會愈來愈亂，貧富不均愈來愈大，但對「能吃苦會成功」還是高度認同，贊同「拜金笑貧」的比例還是很低。 本研究比較1984年10月和1990年2月兩次台灣社會變遷基本調查的資料卻發現，雖然影響這兩種經濟態度的變數沒有變化，即「基本的經濟倫理和價值」受社會背景（如教育），也就是長期社會化的影響，而對「當前經濟環境」的反應受目前社會經濟地位（如職業）的影響，在兩次調查中都一樣。但是，比較所謂「深層」的「基本經濟倫理和價值」和應屬「表層」的「當前經濟環境的反應」在兩次調查的變動，卻發現前者平均比後者的變動要大，也一樣受環境的巨大影響。台灣有其特殊的文化當無疑義，這種文化也包括了經濟文化，但這種「經濟文化」可能不是知識分子所想像的「傳統中國文化」中「經濟價值」的理想型式。本文結論認為所謂「深層」或「基本」的態度和價值的持續存在，是以相關環境變化不大為前題。和1990年的台灣政經狂飆比較，1984年台灣政經上只有小風雨。由於經濟環境的大改變後，所謂「深層倫理和價值」的改變比對「經濟環境的反應」的改變還要大，而且這些價值觀是相當抽象的，不涉及個人利益，這使人懷疑，所謂深層的價值觀是否真是「深層」的，是否對經濟環境改變具有抗拒改變的力量。
• 英文摘要： This study compares data from two island-wide surveys (1984 and 1990) to uncover changesin“fundamental" (often referred to as Confucian) and "circumstantial" values and attitudes asfactors in Taiwan's economic success. Results confirm the author's 1990 finding that economicvalues are attributable to long-term socialization factors such as education, while economicopportunities are attributable to economic factors such as occupation, income, and employmentstatus. Attitudes regarding the distribution of wealth are seen as being attributable to bothlong-term socialization and short-term economic factors. For this study it was assumed that economic values are, in fact, fundamental values; there-fore, these values are subject to change via long-term socialization processes but not currentcircumstances. As socio-economic-political changes were much more turbulent before the 1990survey than before the 1984 survey, I hypothesized that changes in economic opportunity attitudeswould be larger than in attitudes concerning economic values. However, results proved theopposite to be true. It appears that socio-economic circumstances influenced fundamentaleconomic values more than they influenced the circumstantial economic attitudes; therefore,economic values such as“success via hard work”may not be fundamental (as suggested byculturalists). Instead, the opposite may be true-that Taiwan's economic success has influencedthe population's work ethic.
