The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is widely expected to serve as the basis for future Broadband ISDN (BISDN). To support BISDN services, the ATM switch must be capable of providing both multicast connections and unicast connections. In this paper, a new multicast switch architecture based on the combination of a copy network and a cube switch is proposed. The concept of cubes is introduced and employed as the addressing scheme. Employing the cube concept, the output addresses of a multicast cell are first replicated into the number of cubes by means of a copy network, instead of the number of output addresses. Second, the replicated cubes are fed to the proposed nonblocking cube switch, which routes the cubes to the output addresses of the multicast connection. Thus, the number of copies in the copy network can be reduced in the multicast cell. Therefore, a small probability of cell loss in the
copy network is obtained. Additionally, the memory requirement is reduced in the TNT (Trunk Number Translators) of the copy network. Cubes are fed to the routing switch as the number of cubes instead of the number of output addresses of a multicast connection is obtained by the copy network. Thus, we also propose a nonblocking multicast switch for cubes. The nonblocking switching network for cubes is composed of a Batcher-Banyan network and a broadcast Banyan switch. The performance of the copy network is evaluated based on use of the cube address-ing scheme, and a comparison is made. The results show that the proposed multicast switch achieves improved performance. Thus, the proposed multicast switch is a good alternative for application to the ATM multicast switching system. - 英文摘要: --
