The conditions for optimum nonisothermal adiabatic volumetric ratio
for continuous stirred tank reactors in two-reactor system and multistage system
are formulated. The optimum volumetric ratio for an isothermal system is readily
reduced from the general, nonisothermal relationship. Numerical results for
optimum intermediate conversion, optimum volumetric ratio and optimum volumetric
efficiency as function of exit conversion are presented for two-reactor system with
reaction order, dimensionless activation energy and dimensionless heat of reaction
as parameters. Volume reduction by the optimum arrangement is compared with
the convenient equal-sized reactors. Optimum volume efficiency is significant in
