The orthographic history of Chinese characters suggests that they evolved to representspeech sounds while continuing to represent objects and events. It is now commonly assumedthat present-day Chinese characters are too complex to easily learn and write, and mainlandChina has acted on this assumption by the introduction of simplified characters. The presentpaper tries to evaluate the effects of character simplification on Chinese reading and writing.Mainland China's 2173 simplified characters were used as samples for analysis. Results showthat use of these simplified characters saved on average 1.8 strokes per character. However, use of these simplified characters generate a number of visually similar characters and poly-semies, which might make reading Chinese characters more difficult. It is concluded that caseof reading should also be taken into consideration in efforts to simplify Chinese characters.Toward this end, six principles for character simplification are proposed.
