Rubber modified styrene/methyl methacrylate polymers have been syn-
thesized via three different routes, i.e. bulk, bulk-suspension and suspension
polymerization at 70-90℃. When the overall (mainly mechanical and transparent)
performance is concerned, the preferred is the one prepared by bulk polymerization
whose initial composition is 70 wt% methyl methacrylate; 5 wt% polybutadiene
rubber and 25 wt% styrene at 90℃. Based on the ASTM method, its tensile
strength has been determined as 6000 psi; impact strength 1.3 ft-lb/in; degree of
light transmission 88%; softening point 135℃ and flow beginning temperature
185℃. Phase inversion occurs at 9-10% of solid content. Thus, the tailor-made
concept to modify ABS in color deficiency has been accomplished. Further these
data indicate the laboratory-made polymer is comparable with those made commer-
