Carrot was severely infected with powderymildew in the experiment field in the campusof the National Chung Hsing University, Tai-chung, Taiwan, from the winter of 1978 to thespring of 1979. The asexual stage of the causalorganism was the same as that reported byWu in Taipei in 1977. The fungus formedcylindric-oblong or elliptic, hyaline, granulate,one-celled conidia, solitarily on short, unbranchconidiophores. The conidia ranged from 29.4-52.9 x 8.8-20.6 m with average of 42.6 x 14.5 m.Conidiophores were erect, hyaline, with 0-2septae, without swollen foot cell. The perfectstage of the fungus was also observed on theinfected leaves. It produced brownish black,spherical cleistothecia with no ostiole, but boremycelial-like, hyaline, unbranched or vaguelybranched and flexuous appendages, which werenot swollen at their base. Cleistothecia contained2 to 7, usually 3-5, elongated ovate, slight stalk-ed asci which measured 49.3-84.1 x 34.8-60.9 mwith average of 69.6 x 40.6 m. There were 2to 6, usually 4, single cell ascospores per ascus.Ascospores were yellowish, ellipsoidal or shoesole-shaped, ranged from 26.6-46.6 x 12.3-20.7 mwith average of 33.8 x 16.2 m. The fungus wasidentified as Erysiphe heraclei DC. The conidia germinated from 20 to 32 Con 2% water agar plate with optimum temper-ature at 28 C.
